Edible Oils

Edible oils come in many varieties and from many different sources. Oils are derived from plants, animals, or synthetic fat. Depending upon the type of oil and its relative smoke point, these edible oils are used in frying, baking, and other types of cooking. In addition, edible oils are also used in food preparation and as a means of flavoring. These preparations may not involve heat or cooking, such as salad dressings and bread dips. Infused oils are very popular and used to top or dress a dish prior to serving.

Cooking oils are most often found in liquid form at room temperature. Some oils, such as coconut oil, palm oil, and palm kernel oil, may be solid depending on ambient temperature. You will find them solid during the colder months (below 70-75 degrees) and liquid in the warmer months.

Plant-based Edible Oils

There are a wide variety of edible oils, many from plant sources such as:
• olive oil
• palm oil
• soybean oil
• sunflower oil
• corn oil
• tallow

Animal-based Edible Oils

There are also several oils that are derived from animal fat. At Interra International, we offer a wide variety of tallow products that range from extra fancy to lower grade yellow grease. Tallow is solid at room temperature and can easily be stored without refrigeration if properly sealed. Tallow is used in soaps, feed, and oleochemicals which are widely used in home and personal products.
